HOW WE GOT HERE: A LEGACY OF MANUFACTURING INNOVATION
Foundations in Automation
R&E Automated traces its origins to 1999, when the company began helping manufacturers solve complex automation challenges through engineering expertise and technical support. With the launch of DC Automation in 2001, a small team of 12 PLC programmers focused on delivering reliable automation solutions. By 2005, the company had grown to 20 employees and established a strong reputation in manufacturing automation.
Expanding Capabilities
As demand for advanced manufacturing technology increased, R&E expanded both its team and services. By 2009, the company reached $5 million in revenue and added departments for controls design, training, and laser technologies. Continued growth led to new weld engineering and mechanical design capabilities, and by 2013, R&E opened its Macomb, Michigan facility and launched U.S. machining operations, marking an important step toward becoming a full-service automation partner.
Growth and Innovation
During this period, R&E continued scaling its workforce and services while introducing prototype and assembly capabilities. The company opened its Romeo, Michigan facility in 2017 to support growing demand and launched the R&E Development Group in 2018 to advance engineering innovation. By this time, the team had grown to more than 450 employees.
Strategic Expansion
In 2019, R&E significantly expanded its capabilities through the acquisitions of RMG Design, UTEC, and IPS, while also integrating Roman Engineering and launching MIC Services. The company broadened its geographic reach with new facilities in South Carolina, Port Huron, and Taylor, Michigan, and continued investing in growth in 2020 with a 100,000-square-foot expansion in South Carolina and the addition of E-Coat line capabilities.
Scaling for the Future
R&E’s growth continued into the 2020s, reaching $81 million in revenue and more than 500 employees in 2021 while adding SMX and stamping capabilities. By 2022, revenue surpassed $100 million, and today the company employs over 700 professionals. Continued facility expansion in South Carolina and Macomb, Michigan have landed R&E at ~1,000,000 sq ft. in total footprint. This positions R&E to support the next generation of manufacturing automation.
